When Is the Best Time to Visit Sousse for Beaches and Day Trips?

Updated October 23, 2026 · 5 min read

For the best balance, visit Sousse in May, June, September or October. The coast is warm enough for outdoor days, while sightseeing is generally easier than in peak summer. Beach-first travellers should favour June or September; visitors planning El Jem and Kairouan should favour spring or autumn. For that inland day, the El Jem, Kairouan and Sousse or Monastir VIP trip with pickup costs €22.41, lasts 8–9 hours and is rated 4.7 from 489 reviews.

May and June: the flexible choice

May is particularly good for the medina, the Ribat and long walks along the seafront. Tunisia’s tourism climate table gives Sousse an average daytime maximum of 25°C in May and 29°C in June. The sea warms later than the air, so May suits sunbathing better than travellers who insist on very warm water.

June is the useful compromise for a mixed holiday: the table gives a 29°C average maximum and only 2 average rainy days. It is hotter inland than beside the sea, so an all-day archaeological trip still deserves an early start and water. The advantage over July and August is not “cool weather”; it is a less extreme version of summer.

July and August: choose them for the beach

The same climate table gives average maxima of 32°C in July and 33°C in August, with the sea at about 25°C in July and 26–27°C in August. Those months make sense when swimming, a resort pool and evening activity are the purpose of the trip. They are a weaker choice for slow exploration of exposed ruins or a long medina walk around midday. Popular resorts and family dates are also busier.

Do not treat coastal conditions as a guide to the Sahara. Southern Tunisia has a different climate, and a two-day desert itinerary involves long drives and outdoor stops. If the Sahara is central to the holiday, move the trip into the cooler part of the year.

September and October: milder sightseeing

September keeps a summer feel, with an average maximum of 30°C in the tourism table, while October falls to 26°C. October is also the wettest month in that Sousse table, averaging 55 mm across 6 days, so it is a comfortable sightseeing month rather than a promise of uninterrupted beach weather.

Spring and autumn are the sensible windows for combining the coast with El Jem and Kairouan. The day trip spends 8–9 hours away, so milder weather matters more than it does on a short boat cruise.

Winter: quiet, not a beach guarantee

December to February brings average daytime maxima of 17–18°C and more rainy days than summer. It can be pleasant for history and cafés, but short daylight, wind and changeable weather make it a poor bet for a classic beach holiday. Some seasonal boat activities may have less availability, so check dates before choosing a winter stay around one excursion.

Our recommendation: choose June or September for beach plus sightseeing, May or October for culture-heavy days, and July or August only when heat and busy resorts do not bother you. For the main inland excursion, the El Jem and Kairouan VIP day trip with pickup is the clearest match.
