Sousse Medina and Ribat on Your Own: Do You Need a Guide?
Updated October 22, 2026 · 5 min read
You can see the medina and the Ribat of Sousse without a guide. If you want the history explained, the half-day heritage walk to the medina, Ribat and museums costs €24.50, is rated 4.8 from 66 reviews, and is the one to choose. The medina is the old walled town in the centre of Sousse, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, and it is compact enough to cover on foot in a morning.
What there is to see
The Ribat is the landmark. It is a fortified monastery-fortress reconstructed in 821 under the Aghlabid emir Ziyadat Allah I, and a tower with a spiral staircase inside lets you climb up to look across the medina. The Great Mosque of Sousse stands nearby, in the same walled town, and the Kasbah and the Archaeological Museum belong to the same World Heritage listing. Together they make a half-day of sights within a few minutes’ walk of each other.
Doing it on your own
The simplest plan is to start at the Ribat, climb the tower, walk to the Great Mosque, and then drift through the souks, with the museum as a cooler stop in the middle of the day. Opening hours and entrance fees are not something we can state with confidence, so check them at the gate or ask your hotel on the day. Start in the morning. The alleys are shaded in places, but the squares and the walk between the sights are not.
What you give up without a guide is context: why the Ribat was built, how to read the inscriptions, what you are looking at in the museum, and where the shop ends and the pressure to buy begins.
The three guided options
| Tour | Duration | From | Rating | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Half-day heritage walk to the medina, Ribat and museums | 4 hours | €24.50 | 4.8 from 66 reviews | The history, with a licensed guide |
| Souk walking tour with food tasting and haggling tips | 2 hours | €23.59 | 5.0 from 99 reviews | The market, and how to shop in it |
| Boat ride and medina tour from Port El Kantaoui | 5 hours | €76 | 4.8 from 19 reviews | A scenic boat ride combined with a visit to the old town |
All prices are per person. In the medina category as a whole the listings start at €15, with a middle price of €60. The category also lists a walk through the medina of Sousse with the Grand Mosque, the Ribat and the souks: 2.5 hours, €22, 5.0 from 39 reviews. Its description says little about the programme, but price and rating make it an alternative to the half-day walk.
Heritage walk or souk walk
The four-hour walk is described as an exploration of the medina, the Ribat and selected museums with a licensed guide, built around local stories. It is the better fit if the monuments are your reason to come. The souk tour is shorter and built around the market, and the listing promises a free sample of Tunisian fast food and tips on haggling. Its 5.0 from 99 reviews is the strongest score of the three, and you pay €0.91 less than for the longer walk, but its description does not mention the Ribat. If you want both, ask whether the longer walk already passes through the souks before you book the two.

The boat-and-medina combination
The five-hour tour from Port El Kantaoui adds a scenic boat ride to a visit of the old town in Sousse or Monastir. It costs €76 and has only 19 reviews, 4.8 stars, so the score says little yet. It makes sense if you want one booking for both, but the listing does not tell you how the time splits between boat and town.
When to skip a guide
If you only want a photograph from the Ribat tower and a coffee, you do not need one. If you do not like being approached in souks, a guided souk walk will take some of that pressure off, because someone else deals with the shopkeepers. For a bigger day out from Sousse, the El Jem and Kairouan day trip is the other big historical choice.
Our recommendation
- For most people: the half-day heritage walk.
- For the market: the souk tour, rated 5.0.
- For a short visit on your own: the Ribat tower, the Great Mosque and the souks, in the morning.
