Monastir Ribat and the Bourguiba Mausoleum: Visit on Your Own or With a Tour?
Updated October 22, 2026 · 5 min read
If Monastir is the point of your day, the private half-day excursion to Monastir is the one that spends all its time there: the Ribat, the Bourguiba Mausoleum and the marina, 4 hours for €62 per person, rated 4.9 from 56 reviews. The other Monastir tours combine it with Sousse.
What there is to see
The Ribat of Monastir was built in 796 by Harthama ibn A’yan, the Abbasid governor of Ifriqiya, and was enlarged in later centuries. A tower, the Nador tower, gives views over the yacht harbour, the cemetery, the mausoleum, the Great Mosque and the roofs of the medina. The Mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba, the founder of the modern Tunisian republic, who was born in Monastir, is next door. It was built in his lifetime, in 1963, in the Sidi El Mézeri cemetery. Monastir also has a marina, which the tours use as a walking stop.
Monastir is about 20 km from Sousse, and several tours start from both towns. Opening hours, entrance fees and the rules for visiting the mausoleum are not something we can state with confidence, so check them on the day or ask your hotel. The mausoleum is a burial place, so ask about dress and photography when you arrive.
The four day trips compared
| Tour | Duration | From | Rating | What is described |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private half-day excursion to Monastir | 4 hours | €62 | 4.9 from 56 reviews | The Ribat, the Bourguiba Mausoleum, a walk through the marina |
| Half-day tour of Monastir and Sousse with Kantaoui pickup option | 6 to 8 hours | €30 | 4.5 from 29 reviews | Monastir Ribat, Sousse Ribat and the souks of the medina, door-to-door pickup |
| Full-day tour with Ribat and medina | 1 day | €55 | 4.8 from 16 reviews | The Ribat of Monastir, Qaraiya Beach, the medina of Sousse |
| Private half-day guided tour of Sousse and Monastir | not stated | €45 | 4.6 from 10 reviews | The medinas, the Ribat of Sousse, mosaics at the Archaeological Museum |
All prices are per person. The €30 tour is called a half-day tour but is listed at 6 to 8 hours, so read the programme on the booking page. The €45 tour names the Ribat of Sousse, not the one in Monastir, so it is a Sousse tour with a Monastir stop at best, and its description does not say what it shows in Monastir.

Private or shared
Three of the four describe themselves as private: the €62, €30 and €45 tours. The prices are listed per person, so check on the booking page how the price changes with group size before you compare them with the other tours. A private tour lets you set the pace, which matters in a place with only a few main sights close together.
An evening alternative
There is also a guided night tour of Monastir for €15, lasting 2 to 4 hours, covering the mausoleum, the medina, the coast and the marina. It has no reviews yet, and the description does not say whether you can go inside the sights after dark.
When to do it on your own
If you only want to climb the Nador tower and look at the mausoleum from the courtyard, you do not need a guide, because both stand next to each other. What you give up is the explanation: who built the Ribat and why, and what you are looking at inside. For the same reasons as in Sousse, the history is the part a guide adds. Compare it with the Sousse medina and Ribat on your own, which is a shorter walk. For a full day further afield, see the El Jem and Kairouan day trip.
Our recommendation
- For most people: the private half-day excursion, if the group price works out.
- For Monastir and Sousse in one day: the full-day tour, 4.8 from 16 reviews, or the €30 tour if you read its programme first.
- For a boat day from Monastir instead: the Kuriat Islands trip.
